A 23-year-old man who was already in custody for drug trafficking is facing a charge of counsel to commit murder after allegedly arranging a hit while behind bars.

Manitoba RCMP say Benjamin Joseph Goodine was arrested following a long-term investigation called Project Damper, which focused on street-level drug trafficking between August and September.

While remanded at the Dauphin Correctional Centre, police say Goodine attempted to have an associate murder a 21-year-old man in relation to the drug investigation.

RCMP have arrested Goodine and he remains in custody.
