Walmart Canada is rapidly expanding its presence in Canada as Target prepares to enter the marketplace in March.
The retailer’s expansion will add 1.4 million square feet of space and 37 supercentres at a cost of $450 million.
The expansion will take place beginning February 1 through January 31, 2014. The company also announced on Tuesday it will be expanding its distribution network to support its ongoing store growth and expansion plans.
Walmart’s expansion is expected to create more than 7,000 new store, trade and construction jobs, and also includes the first supercentres to open in the Maritimes this fiscal year.
Target Canada will open its first Winnipeg stores later this year as it transitions north of the border into the Canadian market.
