Winnipeg police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the year.
Officers were called to the 500 block of Kylemore Avenue under “suspicious circumstances” early Thursday morning, which later led them to an address in the 100 block of Pear Tree Bay.
Once there, police found the body of a deceased woman in a vehicle. Neighbours say the body was found inside a closed trunk.
Autopsy results are pending and the cause of death hasn’t been confirmed.

UPDATE: Saturday, January 26 — The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Jenilee Rose Ballantyne of Winnipeg. Police have charged Michael Daniel Bourget, 28, of Winnipeg with second-degree murder. According to police, Ballantyne and Bourget were together at a home on Kylemore Avenue on January 24 when an argument ensued, causing Ballantyne to suffer serious injuries. Police allege Bourget then placed her in the trunk of a vehicle and abandoned it in the area of Pear Tree Bay. Bourget turned him into police on Friday.
