Carman Residents Targeted by Telephone Scammers

February 28, 2013 7:00 AM | News

RCMP Crest LogoA telephone scam that guilts seniors into sending money to help a supposed loved one in trouble is targeting residents in Carman, Manitoba.

RCMP say they have received recent complaints regarding the “grandparent” or “emergency” scam, in which a con artist pretends to be a loved one, particular a grandchild, and needs funds wired to help them out of a situation.

Victims don’t verify the information until after the money has been sent, such as through Western Union.

Victims of such telephone fraud can report the incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
