City staff are recommending the empty restaurant space on the Esplanade Riel pedestrian bridge be awarded to Chez Sophie Bistro and Pizzeria.
Area Councillor Dan Vandal said Thursday the north St. Boniface restaurant would replace Salisbury House, which had been on the bridge for the past seven years.
The bistro, currently located at 248 de la Cathedrale Avenue, has been in business for 10 years.
The 4,000-square-foot, year-round restaurant will include its traditional French menu and a souvenir boutique featuring local artists.
The owners are providing $150,000 to $200,000 towards immediate upgrades, pending city approval, and will receive one-year of free rent. Vandal said the owners will pay $2,000/month in years two to five, excluding utilities. The lease takes effect April 1.
It wasn’t immediately known if Chez Sophie would also continue to operate its original location.
