As spring draws closer, the City of Winnipeg is reminding citizens to apply for its flood protection subsidy program to keep their basements dry.

The city, in partnership with the province, is offering $3 million in grants to cover 60% of the cost of installing an in-line backwater valve and sump pit drainage system.

In 2011 and 2012, a combined $4 million protected 2,100 Winnipeg homes with improved basement protection.

Homeowners are eligible to apply if they use a city wastewater sewer, don’t have outstanding city taxes or debt, can secure permits for the work, and hire a licensed plumber and electrician for the installation.

Details on how to apply are available at Winnipeg.ca.
