‘Law Day’ to Give Peek Inside Justice System

Law Courts Gavel ScalesMock trials in English and French will help kick off 2013 Law Day on Sunday, April 14 to celebrate the anniversary of the enactment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Held at the law courts complex at 408 York Avenue, Law Day activities will take place across the country through the Canadian Bar Association and all of its provincial branches.

From noon to 3:30 p.m., elementary and senior high school students will participate in mock trials to get a taste of the justice system.

Manitoba Justice Minister Andrew Swan will be the judge for the Stonewall Centennial School Hansel and Gretel mock trial at 2:15 p.m.

A special sitting of Citizenship Court is scheduled for noon in courtroom 210, as well as debates and a question and answer period. Tours of the courts will be held every 10 minutes, while display booths from over 20 law-related agencies will educate attendees.

Demonstrations by a drug detection dog and handler will run at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

All activities are free and open to the public.
