Super sandbags will begin going up in Brandon this week in preparation for the spring flood fight against the Assiniboine River.
City crews closed the west sidewalk along 18th Street North on Wednesday at the intersection of McGregor Avenue. The closure will be in place until further notice to accommodate the installation of the bags — similar to the measures taken in 2011.
The precautionary measure will see the bags stacked two high near Grand Valley Road, which may also be closed by month’s end.
A sign warning pedestrians of the sidewalk closure has been placed on the west side of 18th Street North to allow pedestrians the safe opportunity to cross over to the east side of the road and use that sidewalk, which will remain open.
The province is expected to provide a flood update on Thursday.
