Outdoor enthusiasts will be in their glory when the massive Cabela’s store in south Winnipeg opens on May 9.

The Nebraska-based retailer is relocating from its former Ellice Avenue location to a much larger space at 580 Sterling Lyon Parkway just west of IKEA. The 70,000-square-foot building is nearly double in size of its former home, which it was leasing from Shindico.

Guns, ammo, fishing roads and a fudge shop are some of the hot items shoppers will find when they walk through the doors of the Seasons of Tuxedo store. The high ceilings also make use of their space by displaying wildlife taxidermy and other attention-grabbers targeted at the outdoorsy-types.

“It’s just the whole experience walking into this building. It’s different than what our customers currently see in our Ellice location,” said store manager Will Yakielashek.

“It’s kind of like a museum and you’ll see the looks on people’s faces when they come in here on May 9. They’ll be astonished with what we have to offer.”

The store will employ about 200 full-time and part-time employees and be one of three Canadian locations. Two more are planned in the country for 2013 and 2014.

The opening is scheduled for 11 a.m.
