The City of Winnipeg will be conducting controlled burns, weather-permitting, starting Thursday May 9.
The burns will take place at several tall grass prairie remnants and restorations throughout Winnipeg, according to a release from the Public Works Department.
All the burns should be completed by Friday, June 7.
“These controlled burns will be conducted in minimal wind conditions with appropriate fire guards in place,” says the city.
“Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade these endangered plant communities.”
The city has been doing controlled burns since 1986.
