RCMP Crest LogoA distraught woman who deliberately drove her vehicle into the Fairford River on Friday was rescued by RCMP.

Police say the woman left a home in Fairford on Friday at around 5 p.m. and drove to the Fairford bridge. When police attempted to make contact with her, she drove her vehicle off the roadway and into the water.

An RCMP officer went into the chilly, fast-moving water to retrieve the woman. Both were soon rescued by a boat and taken to shore. The pair had floated about 2 km downstream during the ordeal.

Both the woman and police officer were treated in hospital for exposure to the cold.
