An East Kildonan couple is Winnipeg’s newest set of multi-millionaires.

Bruce and Monique Willman accepted their $17 million Lotto 6/49 cheque Wednesday during a news conference at the Fort Garry Hotel.

The newly-retired machine shop worker and his wife discovered their windfall Sunday morning while checking their lotto numbers online. The Willmans play the lottery twice weekly and always knew they would eventually hit the jackpot.

“I still don’t believe it,” Bruce said. “But I believed it more after checking at the terminal.”

The couple checked the numbers twice at two separate 7-Elevens to make sure they weren’t dreaming. News of the jackpot leaked over the weekend through social media when family and friends started congratulating Monique on her loosely-secured Facebook page.

Bruce has already used some of the winnings to purchase a new Dodge truck, and plans to relax at the family cabin with wife Monique this summer.
