Steinbach Teen Mistaken for Bear Fatally Shot

RCMP Crest LogoA 17-year-old Steinbach boy camping with friends was shot and killed over the weekend after being mistaken for a bear.

The incident happened about 19 nautical kilometres from the community of Bloodvein on the Bloodvein River at around 4 a.m. on Sunday.

RCMP say a group of four males were camping at Namay Falls when a 22-year-old Steinbach man was awoken to what he believed was a bear close to the campsite. The man shot a firearm, fatally striking the 17-year-old.

The name of the deceased isn’t being released and police continue to investigate.
