Work is underway on the south Perimeter Highway at Fermor Avenue to extend the life of the Fermor Overpass and Highway 1 interchange.

The province is spending $6.5 million to improve safety for motorists and commercial vehicles, with the replacement of overpass girders and the concrete deck.

“This is part of our long-term commitment to invest in roads, bridges and infrastructure throughout Manitoba,” Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton said on Thursday. “This cloverleaf upgrade will help extend the life of the overpass, which is heavily used by Winnipeggers, tourists and commercial travellers.”

Other upgrades include installing new concrete barriers, repairing concrete foundations and improving the roadway approaching the overpass.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction while work is being undertaken and the work will be staged in each of the four quadrants of the overpass.
