A canoe and kayak ride on the Red River this weekend will honour late Winnipeg adventurer Don Starkell.
Author of such books as, “Paddle to the Amazon” and “Paddle to the Arctic,” Starkell will be remembered at the second annual Paddle to the Park.
The ride on Sunday, July 21 will leave from the Manitoba Paddling Association, 80 Churchill Drive, at 10 a.m. and head south on the Red River. The ride will make a 30-minute stop at the Winnipeg Canoe Club at noon before heading back, where an afternoon picnic is planned from 1 to 4 p.m.
“Our goal is to have 100 canoes come out and take part in Paddle to the Park,” said Dana Starkell, Don’s son and co-paddler to the Amazon.
To raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, a canoe sticker is being created depicting their Paddle to the Amazon adventure. The sticker will be available for purchase at Paddle to the Park.
Riders are asked to bring their own watercrafts, paddles, lifejackets, throw rope, sunscreen, hat, water, insect repellent, picnic lunch and folding chair.
