Manitoba Making a Mark at 2013 Canada Summer Games

Team ManitobaThe flag bearers and honourary captain for Team Manitoba were announced Wednesday for the opening ceremonies of the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

The Games will begin August 2 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, as the province’s athletes are led in the parade by cyclist Karlee Gendron of Winnipeg and wrestler Amber Wiebe of Morden.

This will be the fifth multi-sport games for Gendron, who competed as a speed skater at the 2007 Canada Winter Games, bringing home a bronze medal. In 2009, she was a silver medalist in cycling at the Canada Summer Games.

Wiebe is also an experienced Games athlete, who won a silver medal at the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games. Most recently, she won gold in 49kg at the 2013 Canadian Cadet and Juvenile Championships.

Canadian rower and Olympic silver medallist Janine Hanson is the team’s honourary captain. The Winnipeg-raised athlete is a past Canada Games competitor who won two bronze medals in rowing at the 2001 Canada Summer Games. She went on to the 2008 Summer Olympics finishing eighth place in the women’s quad sculls. She is also a two-time World Championship medalist in the eight in 2010 and 2011.

The opening ceremonies will be televised on TSN at 6 p.m. CT on August 2.
