Red River Co-op Speedway isn’t used to seeing cyclists on the track, but the raceway will take on another purpose for just that on September 7.

The third annual DarkCross, Manitoba’s premier cycling event, will open the cyclocross season with an event that will push competitors to their limits.

“The goal of DarkCross is to have both racers and spectators shaking their heads in disbelief over how awesome that was. We want to show the wider Winnipeg community what a good time cyclocross can be,” said race director Chris Huebner.

As racers cycle a course that is lit by bamboo torches, Christmas bulbs, and the bright lights of the speedway, the crowd is encouraged to get as close to the action as possible, cheering and jeering the racers as they cycle and run inches in front of them.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with the first race starting at 5:30 p.m. and the marquee race beginning at 10 p.m. Admission for spectators is free. For more information, or to register, visit DarkCross.ca.
