The Winnipeg Police Service has appointed Superintendent Dave Thorne as Acting Deputy Chief of Police Operations.
The 32-year police veteran will assume the new position October 6 and takes over for the retiring Shelley Hart, police Chief Devon Clunis announced Wednesday.
“Acting Deputy Chief Thorne has had a well-rounded career in the operations branch, evenly divided between uniform patrol and criminal investigations. He was promoted to senior officer in 2004 and appointed as superintendent, uniform operations in 2009,” Clunis said in a release.
Thorne oversaw the downtown Division #11, duty office and Communications Centre Division #36, and was also trained as a hostage negotiator and served as an incident commander at high risk/critical incidents, and presently coordinates that unit.
Clunis said Thorne and Hart, who retires in February 2014, will work alongside each other during a period of overlap to help ensure continuity of leadership and knowledge retention.
