Guard Dog Hit with Sledge Hammer During Robbery

Winnipeg Police CrestA man who allegedly robbed a Winnipeg automotive shop is said to have hit a guard dog with a sledge hammer while making his getaway.

Police say the suspect broke into the shop in the 400 block of Dawson Road at around 2 a.m. on Friday and was loading parts into a stolen truck when police arrived.

The man fled from police at a high rate of speed in a residential area, disobeying numerous traffic lights. The truck then sped over a ditch and jumped a set of railway tracks in the area of Speers Road and Dawson Road North.

The canine unit eventually tracked the suspect down to a business in the 500 block of Mission Street where the man was hiding.

Douglas James Sinclair, 34, is facing several charges, including killing or injuring animals.
