Two new advanced operating rooms opened at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre on Monday, boasting MRI suites comparable to only seven others in the world and a first-of-its-kind in Canada.
The ORs are equipped to accommodate the addition of MRI scans to provide doctors with up-to-date scanning capabilities while a patient remains in surgery. The technology in the MRI suites will also support new research into areas such as traumatic brain injury while giving surgeons new treatment options.
The ORs are part of the Centre for Surgical Innovation, located on the second floor of the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine at HSC Winnipeg. When not used for research and surgery, the MRI can see regular outpatients for medical imaging appointments.
The $25 million project was funded by HSC Foundation donors with backing from the provincial and federal governments, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
