A third contender to lead the Manitoba Liberal Party has entered the race.

Bob Axworthy officially announce his candidacy at an event in Winnipeg on Friday afternoon.

Axworthy is a senior political strategist, chairman of the Thinkers’ Conference and Inner City Action, and a basketball coach for the University of Winnipeg Inner City Wesmen. He’s also the brother of U of W president and former federal cabinet minister Lloyd Axworthy.

Axworthy says his mandate will consist of five major categories: poverty, human rights, environment, education, and the economy.

Voters will be familiar with Axworthy already, who finished second to Tory leader Brian Pallister in last year’s byelection.

Other candidates in the race include lawyer Rana Bokhari and local business owner Dougald Lamont.

The Manitoba Liberal Party will hold its leadership convention on October 26.
