City Hall kicked off its second annual hockey equipment drive on Tuesday in an effort to solicit donations of gently-used hockey equipment.

Donated gear will be distributed to qualifying Winnipeg families by Sport Manitoba’s KidSport program, Winnipeg Minor Hockey and Hockey Manitoba.

“Sport and recreation opportunities should be available to all Winnipeg youth,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “The purpose of this drive is to get equipment into the hands of the kids who dream of playing hockey, but are unable to participate due to financial obstacles. We want to take down some of those obstacles and get more boys and girls into the game.”

The 2012 campaign collected enough gear to outfit approximately 500 young players.

Donations can be made at various city arenas and at City Hall until October 31.
