The Manitoba government wants to double the fines for speeding through a construction zone.
Bill 2 was introduced Friday by Labour and Immigration Minister Erna Braun, which would allow for law enforcement to ticket drivers double the rate of a regular speeding fine.
“When you enter a construction zone, you are entering someone’s workplace. We want to ensure the safety and protection of construction workers,” Braun said.
The rules would also allow for clear signage indicating when reduced limits are in effect, what they are and when they end. Existing signage stating reduced speed limits are in effect only when workers are present would be removed.
Manitoba already has legislation in place to reduce speed limits when passing emergency workers and allowing municipalities to set reduced speed limits in school zones.
