First it was Movember, and now comes “Decembeard.”

The Festival du Voyageur is getting ready for the 32nd annual Beard Growing Contest. Men will be clean shaven in advance of the furry competition, which lasts well into February when the Festival is in full swing.

Contestants collect donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation while competing in a number of categories. New this year is a category meant to get more people involved — including women. Participants don’t necessarily have to grow a beard, but can use their creativity to fabricate their own. Of course, the traditional categories of the Voyageur Beard (wild and woolly) and the Novelty category (groomed mustache or beard) are still in place.

Registration is $35, however, those who collect $100 in donations will be exempt from the fee. Each participant will receive a souvenir package, including the official event T-shirt and a 10-day pass for the Festival du Voyageur.

Staff from Bern’s and Black will carry out the clean shave on December 12 at Garage Café (166 Provencher Boulevard) from 5-8 p.m.
