Business owners in Selkirk are hoping residents shop local this Black Friday, keeping their hard-earned dollars in the community.
Called Black Friday Weekend, the shopping extravaganza will include more than 50 participating merchants in the Selkirk area, offering up deals from November 29-December 1.
The idea first came about three years ago and has since picked up traction with the support of neighbouring municipal governments.
“Once we had the leadership and committee in place, we knew we had the right team to put together a solid plan to sell to our members,” said Sheri Skalesky, executive director of the Selkirk Biz.
“Last year’s initial response was very positive which reassured us we were on the right track. With the 2012 event exceeding our expectations, we had a great foundation to build on for 2013. The response this year was fantastic from the start. We have reached our goal of 50 participants surpassing 31 from last year.”
Selkirk Chambers of Commerce members are provided with promotional items and marketing tools free of charge to help promote their businesses.
The event has been so successful, Steinbach has approached Selkirk organizers and will be holding a similar Black Friday event this year.
