A sod-turning ceremony marked the beginning of a new gymnasium for Queenston School on Wednesday.

The 4,000-square-foot gym addition is scheduled to open next year and is being named in memory of local hero Sheilah Sweatman. At age 29, Sweatman tragically lost her life during a selfless, volunteer mission with Nelson B.C. Search and Rescue in the summer of 2011.

The Sheliah Sweatman Gymnasium will serve over 35,000 area residents in River Heights, Crescentwood and Sir John Franklin areas once complete.

A community fundraising campaign helped the school fund construction for the project.
