The holiday season may be over, but for Ukrainians following the Julian calendar, Christmas extends into January.
Siloam Mission and the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre have teamed up to host a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner at the homeless shelter tonight.
From 7-8 p.m., members of the city’s homeless community will be served all the fixings provided in a Ukrainian Christmas meal, minus any meat or dairy products.
“People experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg come from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds,” said Floyd Perras, Siloam Mission’s executive director. “Having our friends from Oseredok volunteer to provide and serve a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve meal will mean a great deal to many people using our services.”
As part of the tradition, a lit candle will also be placed in the window to welcome people without homes.
