Rally at Legislature to Support Ukraine, Decry Violence

January 24, 2014 7:54 AM | News

A rally in support of Ukraine and against the recent violence in the country will be held today at the Manitoba legislature.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress — Manitoba Provincial Council is holding the rally in front of the Taras Shevchenko monument at 5:30 p.m.

The rally is to decry anti-democratic laws in Ukraine and the escalation of police and protest clashes in Kyiv.

“Earlier rallies have seen over 300 members of Winnipeg’s Ukrainian Canadian community come out to protest the anti-democratic and increasingly authoritarian regime of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych,” a news release from he council read. “This week the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has seen the killing of protesters by government special forces, the abduction, beating — and in once case at least murder — of civil society activists and the intentional targeting of independent journalists.”

Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, former Canadian foreign minister and current president of the University of Winnipeg, is scheduled to be the main speaker at the rally.
