A Winnipeg race car driver has completed his first test days on the professional circuit in Europe.

David Richert has been driving Inter Europol Competition’s Formula Renault 2.0 race car at the Hockenheimring in Germany. The opening event saw 17 cars take to the track to open the Northern European Cup Official Test Days.

“We still need to find a little bit more speed but it was satisfying to see my lap times drop,” Richert said. “Gaining experience is vital as some of these guys have done over 5,000 km in the car already. I have only 500 km, so I need to learn but learn quickly.”

Over the two days, Richert was able to make steady progress on the track despite an electrical problem with his car, which was solved by swapping out steering wheels.

Richert will be back on the track next week for a two-day test at the famous Nurburgring in Germany. The first race weekend is scheduled for April 11-13 at Monza in Italy.
