It will cost visitors to Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo a little more to visit their favourite animals beginning on Tuesday.

Gate admission rises from $8.50 to $10.75 for adults, while children between the ages of two and 12 rise from $5.50 to $6.95.

The cost of a yearly family membership is also going up from $115 to $189.

The zoo says the 25 percent increase is in line with the admission of other North American zoos and is needed to maintain exhibits and add new attractions.

Rates will rise again in the summer once the Journey to Churchill exhibit opens to the public.

In 2013, Assiniboine Park Zoo attracted almost 400,000 people — the highest visitor rate in more than 20 years.
