City Prepares for Mild Weather, Sandbags Available Friday

April 3, 2014 12:51 PM | News

With mild weather in the forecast in the coming days, the City of Winnipeg is preparing for the spring thaw.

Crews will be out opening catch basins and undertaking drainage improvement operations across the city. Crews will also thaw any culverts that have or may freeze up overnight throughout the thaw. Ditch maintenance, to allow for the free flowing of water, is currently ongoing and will continue until completed.

Pothole repairs are also continuing with six patching machines and a python patcher on the streets.

Beginning on Friday, sandbags will also be made available to residents worried about the potential of overland flooding. Citizens wishing to receive bags should provide photo ID to confirm city residency at any of these public works locations: 1220 Pacific Avenue, 960 Thomas Avenue and 1539 Waverley Street. Pickups can be made Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The city is also closing snow dumps to the public on Saturday, April 5.
