An early morning fire in St. Boniface has claimed the life of one man.

Crews rushed to the 300 block of Enfield Crescent near Marion Street at around 5 a.m., where they located the man in the basement of the three-storey rooming house.

A Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service spokesperson said the victim had burns to his back and was suffering from smoke inhalation. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

Seven other people were able to escape unharmed.
