The University of Winnipeg’s UNITED Health & RecPlex has received a financial boost from Wawanesa Insurance.

The Canadian mutual company has contributed $50,000 to the $40 million recreation complex on Spence Street. The state-of-the-art facility will open in September and provide safe and affordable activity space for inner city youth and residents, supporting enhanced student intramural and Wesmen sports programs and academic research.

“The RecPlex is a critically important new community resource that would not be possible without generous private donors who are community builders like Wawanesa, which has its head office here in Winnipeg,” said U of W president and vice-chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy.

The new RecPlex is connected by skywalk to the U of W’s Duckworth Centre, and will also include an athletic therapy clinic staffed with athletic therapists, massage therapists, and sports medicine practitioners.
