MTS and EPIC Information Solutions have broken ground on a new 64,000-square-foot data centre in south Winnipeg.

The EPIC Data Centre at 1450 Waverley Street will handle business computing solutions in the cloud and advanced IT equipment for MTS and customers of its EPIC subsidiary.

“This will be Manitoba’s most sophisticated and most reliable multi-tenant data centre,” said MTS Allstream CEO Pierre Blouin. “By building the data centre from the ground up, we have total control over its location, capacity and design. The data centre will provide highly reliable and secure data centre space and IT services for our customers.”

The centre’s design calls for advanced cooling techniques that help decrease energy consumption and cooling costs by up to 70 percent, while also achieving LEED status.

Construction of the $52 million facility is already underway and will be complete by the spring or summer of 2015. Thirty full-time positions will be created as a result, along with spinoff positions to assist the estimated 500-800 customers manage their equipment.

“This facility will create good jobs for young Manitobans to build their futures right here at home,” said Jobs and the Economy Minister Theresa Oswald. “These are the jobs of tomorrow that we hear so much about and they are now being created here in Manitoba.”
