New energy efficiency targets from Manitoba Hydro are estimated to save ratepayers $157 million in 2017.
Stan Struthers, minister responsible for Manitoba Hydro, says that under the aggressive new targets, successful Power Smart programs for low income Manitobans will be strengthened.
“We are expanding the eligibility under the Affordable Energy Program, which already enables lower income customers to install a new energy efficient natural gas furnace for as little as $9.50 a month,” Struthers said.
A street-by-street marketing program will also encourage families to retrofit their home to make it more energy efficient and reduce their energy bill.
Additional savings under the new Power Smart plan will include new programs and enhancements targeting residential, business and commercial customers as Manitoba Hydro aims to generate additional electricity savings of 411 megawatts (MW) and 1064 gigawatt hours (GW.h). Total cumulative savings by 2017 are on track to equal 905 megawatts of capacity and 3,358 GW.h of electricity.
