Winnipeg city council has approved a motion to give councillors a vote on who is selected to sit on the executive policy committee.

Known as the mayor’s “inner circle,” the committee works to pass a number of initiatives brought forward outside of regular council meetings.

In a 14-2 vote, councillors agreed to the motion that would see them appoint three members to EPC while the mayor retains power to choose the other three.

Councillors Paula Havixbeck and Harvey Smith voted against the change.

The province will need to amend the City of Winnipeg charter to allow the change, which won’t go into effect until after October’s civic election.
