Churchill Rail Line Disruption Could End Soon

June 25, 2014 10:55 AM | News

Via Rail Canada says it will resume service between Gillam and Churchill, Manitoba after a thorough safety assessment on the Hechmer subdivision.

The service disruption comes after a June 2 train derailment near Churchill, which triggered an investigation by OmniTRAX, the owners of the railway line in northern Manitoba.

Since then, passenger and freight rail service to the community has been halted. Via says it is working with the track owners to safely resume the passenger service to Churchill.

“We will resume the service between Gillam and Churchill once OmniTRAX has demonstrated that all our safety requirements have been met and that the track is once again deemed safe for passenger train operations,” said Denis Pinsonneault, Via Rail’s chief operating officer, in a statement.

Passenger train service continues to be offered between Winnipeg and Gillam according to the normal schedule.
