Woman Killed in Donald Street Shooting

A woman is dead following an apparent accidental shooting in the 100 block of Donald Street early Canada Day.

Winnipeg police were called to the Chateau 100 apartment block at around 3 a.m. The man who called in the incident remained at the scene and was taken into custody.

Police say it’s believed the man had been handling a legally registered 9mm handgun when the victim grabbed at his arm and the gun fired.

The victim has been identified as Michelle Stobbe, 28, of Winnipeg.

John Elwood Cameron, 35, has been charged with causing death by criminal negligence, careless storage of a firearm, and two counts of having a prohibited weapon or ammunition.

He remains in custody.
