Taps could run this clear for more of the city after the water main cleaning program begins.

The City of Winnipeg will begin cleaning about 25 percent of all water mains this weekend as part of its annual water main cleaning program.

Approximately 646 km of pipe will be cleaned this season at a faster pace than usual in an effort to rid the city of its ongoing brown tap water problem. The program will clean all 2,585 km of water main in a two-year program, as compared to the routine program of six years.

Cleaning will run seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Crews will hand-deliver an information package up to seven days before the water main cleaning on each street, and signs will be placed at either end of the street during the cleaning. Residents can see if their street is on the weekly cleaning schedule by visiting the water main cleaning schedule website.
