Water levels on the Assiniboine River are already beginning to drop near Portage la Prairie.

The river crested at midnight Thursday at 52,100 cubic feet per second (cfs) on the Portage Reservoir — slightly less than 2011 levels at 52,300 cfs.

Emergency Measures Minister Steve Ashton says small leaks on some dikes were detected by the military’s Aurora surveillance aircraft, sending provincial staff to quickly fix them.

The RM of Portage la Prairie has lifted its mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders for Delta Beach along the diversion.

Downstream of the Assiniboine, the river is expected to crest in St. Francois Xavier west of Winnipeg later today.
