The Assiniboine Park Zoo will tag and release a collection of monarch butterflies on Monday afternoon.
It’s the fourth year the zoo has carried out the release with the monarchs at the Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden.
“The timing of the release will allow our monarch butterflies the opportunity to undertake their natural migration,” said Janice Martin, curator of Assiniboine Park Zoo. “It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us to educate children and our visitors about monarch butterflies.”
The tagging program provides valuable information for researchers, allowing them to determine the path of the monarch migration and monitor the insects that successfully complete their journey south.
The release is set for 1 p.m. following a brief educational session. In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled to Tuesday at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
