The United Way of Winnipeg has a goal of $20.7 million to reach by the end of the year.
The 2014 campaign kicked off Friday with the 11th annual Plane Pull event at Red River College’s Stevenson campus. More than 55 corporate teams pulled together to move airplanes on the tarmac in a show of team spirit.
About 1,500 people gathered for the campaign launch as chair Sandra Oakley unveiled their target amount.
“We are Winnipeg. We are possibility,” she told the crowd as she arrived in a Manitoba Hydro bucket truck.
“Whether you can contribute $20, $200 or $2000, you can change someone’s life right here in Winnipeg,” Oakley said, noting someone accesses a United Way-supported program or service on average every two minutes.
As of this week, nearly $6 million had already been raised.
