WestJet to Begin Charging Passengers for First Checked Bag

WestJetIt’s what separated them from the competition, but WestJet has decided to now charge passengers to check their first bag.

Beginning for bookings made Monday for travel as of October 29, guests will have to shell out $25 for a first checked bag on Econo fare seats while travelling within Canada and between Canada and the U.S. Those travellers flying to international destinations, including Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe can check their first bag at no additional charge.

The change applies only to the airline’s cheaper, Econo fares. Those who book a Flex fare won’t be impacted, nor will Plus fare guests, who can already check two bags at no charge.

WestJet has always charged a fee for a second checked bag.

Baggage allowance fees will continue to be waived for military personnel who show identification, infant and child equipment, mobility devices and code-share and interline guests.

The change is expected to affect approximately one in five WestJet guests.
