Winnipeg Man Kidnapped After Being Assaulted, Carjacked

Winnipeg Police CrestA carjacking and kidnapping turned into a joy ride for a suspect after a 67-year-old man was approached after parking his vehicle early Friday.

Winnipeg police say the victim was in the area of Beverley Street and Sargent Avenue when an intoxicated man began physically assaulting him in the upper body. The man fell to the ground and was repeatedly assaulted, causing multiple injuries.

The suspect demanded cash before taking the victim for a ride in his own vehicle to two local ATM locations to withdrawal more.

Police say the suspect struck a pole in the area of Portage Avenue and Arlington Street and nearly collided with a pedestrian.

The victim was finally let out of the vehicle after about 20 minutes of being assaulted in the area of Broadway and Spence Street.

The police tactical support team caught up with the vehicle at around 12:50 a.m. near St. Mary Avenue and Balmoral Street.

Michael Mikolajczyk, 34, of Winnipeg was arrested. He faces charges of driving while impaired and having more than 80 mgs of alcohol in his blood, robbery, kidnapping, uttering threats, identity fraud, driving while disqualified, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.

He remains in custody.
