A female corrections officer was killed Thursday after being ejected from a transport van on Highway 10.
Manitoba RCMP say the single-vehicle crash happened at around 9:45 a.m. approximately 45 km south of The Pas.
A Manitoba Corrections van was transporting six prisoners to Dauphin from The Pas at the time of the crash. The vehicle was travelling southbound when the driver lost control, entered the east ditch and rolled. Road conditions are considered to be a factor.
The 44-year-old female passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 43-year-old male driver, also a corrections officer, was taken to hospital in stable condition. Both were from The Pas.
The six prisoners suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
“It’s with a great sadness that we learned of the death of this officer,” said Justice Minister James Allum. “Our hearts and thoughts are with the family, friends and co-workers of the officer, who died in the line of duty. Our thoughts are also with a second officer who was injured in the accident and is now in hospital.”
