A Winnipeg police officer was assaulted Wednesday after apprehending a man being held by security officers at Portage Place Shopping Centre.
Police were called to the mall at around 2:35 p.m. for a theft incident involving two male suspects.
One of the suspects fled the area, while the other was caught by mall security. While in custody, the suspect physically assaulted three security officers before police arrived. Once in the custody of police, an officer was kicked in the upper body. He was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.
Hamza Masabo, 18, of Winnipeg has been charged with three counts of assault, assaulting a peace officer, public mischief, possession of marijuana, and three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
He remains in custody.
