Vehicle Break-Ins Spike in River Heights

November 14, 2014 3:39 PM | News

Winnipeg Police CrestA rash of recent vehicle break-ins in River Heights has prompted Winnipeg police to issue a warning to the public.

More than 80 reports have been received of parked vehicles being broken into within the last month.

Police say incidents include vehicles left unlocked and property removed, locked vehicles having windows smashed and contents stolen, and in many cases, valuables were left in plain view.

Police offer the following tips to discourage criminals:

  • Always try to park in well-lighted and busy areas. This is important for both your personal safety and the protection of your vehicle and its contents.
  • All doors should be locked and the windows closed. Never leave the motor running or the key in the ignition, as this is an open invitation to a car thief.
  • Do not leave packages or property in plain view inside your vehicle. Keep the vehicle clean and empty of personal items that may attract thieves.

Police say you should report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information regarding suspect(s) in relation to the recent vehicle break-ins is asked to contact police at (204) 986-2877 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
