A new social media campaign by the City of Winnipeg is helping inform pet owners about the upcoming requirement to license their cats.

Called #Whiskerpeg, the city will use its Twitter and Facebook accounts to raise awareness ahead of the January 1, 2015 start date for feline licensing.

“Introducing #Whiskerpeg is a unique way to spread the message about the importance of cat licensing,” said Leland Gordon, chief operating officer of the Animal Services Agency. “The character also reminds animal lovers that 50 percent of their cat licensing revenues go to community spay and neuter programs, helping other cats throughout the City of Winnipeg.”

Annual license fees for spayed and neutered pets are $15 for cats and $30 for dogs ($50 for intact cats and $65 for intact dogs).

Cat owners can pre-purchase cat licenses beginning today online at Winnipeg.ca/animalservices, by calling 311, or in person at 1057 Logan Avenue. A number of pet supply stores and other locations will also be selling licenses.
