An inmate serving time in Stony Mountain Institution north of Winnipeg has died.

Correction officials say Lionel Joseph Tavares, 56, was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday. He was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.

Traverse had been serving a five-year, seven-month sentence since June 2, 2010 for break and enter and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
