A luxury spa catering to those wanting to relax and unwind is officially open in Winnipeg.
Thermea opens today after two years of construction on the Crescent Drive Golf Course in Fort Garry.
Quebec-based Nordik Group is behind the $11 million project, which offers thermotherapy facilities such as outdoor baths (hot, cold and temperate), unique saunas, and numerous indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. There’s also an on-site licensed restaurant for guests who have paid spa admission.
“We know the Thermea experience will attract visitors — probably as far as about 1,600 kilometres away — because there’s nothing else like it,” said Chantal Sturk-Nadeau, senior vice-president of Tourism Winnipeg.
“So not only will it also enable those that are coming for meetings and conventions to extend their stay, it will also be able to get those leisure travellers that don’t have this experience anywhere else, to really come… stay in our city and experience it.”
The development was originally announced in October 2011 under the name Nordik Spa-Nature before taking on the name of Thermea.
Nordik’s original spa in Chelsea, Québec remains one of the largest of its kind anywhere in North America.
The cost to visit is $45 for a thermal experience Monday to Thursday and $49 for Friday to Sunday. Packages and à la carte items are available for an additional cost, such as massage therapy and body treatments.
Thermea is located 775 Crescent Drive and operates daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
